Four-cylinder racing engines making big power is nothing new, but a four-banger designed to make big power and last an entire season is. Audi has unveiled its engine for the 2019 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) season: a turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 that it says produces more than 610 hp and can run for approximately 3,700 miles.
Unlike other series, DTM requires teams to use the same engine for an entire season. For 2019, that includes nine races each covering various distances, in addition to practice and qualifying sessions. That’s a lot to ask of an engine pushing as much as 50 psi of boost. To help ensure longevity and reliability, Audi says it spent two and a half years developing the engine. Of that time, roughly 1,000 hours were spent testing on a dynamometer.
“The format of the DTM is a great challenge,” Stefan Dreyer, head of powertrain development [...]
Nissan may have discontinued the Juke here in the U.S., but we haven’t forgotten about it. Its looks were just as polarizing as the way it drove. While some thought it was quirky and fun-to-drive, others considered it a cramped econobox. Either way, the second-generation Nissan Juke is on its way, at least for global markets. And it appears to have changed quite a bit.
Unless the camouflage is leading us astray, the prototype appears to have slim headlights. This look is quite a contrast from the bug-eyed appearance of the previous model, which placed the daytime running lights atop the fenders parallel with the hood. The lower lamps, which could again serve as the car’s actual headlights, are still round but are smaller now. The grille forms a deeper V, giving it a bolder look, and the lower vents have changed.
The model keeps its small size, [...]
President Donald Trump tweeted on Sunday that he urged General Motors Co’s chief executive to “do something quickly” to reopen the company’s Lordstown, Ohio, plant that was idled more than a week ago. “I am not happy that it is closed when everything else in our Country is BOOMING,” Trump said. Referring to his conversation with CEO Mary Barra, Trump added: “I asked her to sell it or do something quickly. She blamed the UAW union — I don’t care, I just want it open!” he tweeted.
Trump also tweeted on Saturday to urge GM to reopen the plant, saying: “Toyota is investing 13.5 $Billion in U.S., others likewise. G.M. MUST ACT QUICKLY. Time is of the essence!” Earlier on Sunday, the United Auto Workers, which has filed suit challenging GM’s decision to end Cruze production at Lordstown, thanked the president “for fighting alongside the UAW against @GM. We will leave no stone unturned to [...]
Cadillac’s pledge to launch a new vehicle every six months continues with the introduction of the 2020 CT5, a sedan that essentially replaces the ATS and CTS in the luxury brand’s lineup. A smaller CT4 will be shown later this year, the CT6 remains available, and Cadillac’s crossover lineup is expanding, too. The XT4 recently launched, the new three-row XT6 goes on sale soon, and a refreshed XT5 will be shown later this year.
“We’re still very committed to sedans,” Cadillac president Steve Carlisle said. People who buy sedans often do so deliberately—they are SUV-rejecters. “Sedans also serve as a gateway to the brand,” he said. And there is ample opportunity for growth in key large markets such as China so Cadillac will not be exiting the car market any time soon.
Visitors to the 2019 New York auto show next month will see the 2019 Cadillac CT5, which is being assembled at the Lansing [...]
You get to know a vehicle on a road trip. The Ascent logged its longest to date when office-mate Frank Markus took a 2,114-mile jaunt from Detroit to Memphis, Greenville South Carolina, and back.
The Ascent doesn’t have the same grunt as the Durango that made a similar trip a year earlier, but the Subaru averaged 22.4 mpg, whereas the Dodge logged 2,024 miles and averaged 18.9 mpg. That means the Ascent’s 2.5-liter turbo delivers an 18.5 percent improvement in fuel economy at a cost in 0–60 mph acceleration of just 7.8 percent, relative to the V-8 Durango. “Let’s face it, most buyers will have more opportunity to enjoy the efficiency than they will the drag-racing performance,” Markus admits. With 5,861 miles on the odometer since October, our Ascent is averaging 19.9 mpg, up 0.2 from the arrival calculation.
The three-row SUV was more than laden. It took [...]
