The 2020 Toyota Supra made its long-awaited debut at the Detroit auto show today. The U.S. version will come exclusively with an inline-six-cylinder engine just like all previous generations of the Supra. But customers in Japan will have the option to buy one with a four-cylinder.
That shouldn’t come as too big a surprise considering the BMW Z4 that shares its platform and drivetrains with the Mk V also offers a turbo-four, but the idea of a four-banger Supra is still a little weird to us. In Japan, Toyota is offering a 2.0-liter twin-scroll turbocharged inline-four in two different states of tune. The more conservative one makes 194 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque, enough to propel the car to 62 mph in 6.5 seconds, according to Toyota. The more robust version makes 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, matching the BMW Z4 sDrive30i. Toyota says this engine allows the Supra to hit 62 [...]
Cadillac is a brand under repair. Cynics paint a faded marque in existential peril. Optimists see light on the horizon.
The crown jewel of the General Motors empire is pulling up stakes from its Manhattan headquarters to return to the safe confines of Detroit after its four-year experiment in the big city. This followed GM firing the brand’s top executive just a few months prior. The entire lineup is under review, as the future of the current flagship CT6 sedan is in doubt when it ceases production at the Detroit-Hamtramck plant in June after barely three years on sale. The new strategy is to make Cadillac GM’s “lead electric vehicle brand,” and it will get the first vehicle from the automaker’s new BEV3 platform, which will produce a family of electric vehicles of all body styles and offered with front-, rear- and all-wheel drive.
Countering the Lincoln lineup—with [...]
Despite the similarities in name, the Tokyo Auto Salon is a very different show from the bi-annual Tokyo Motor Show. Annually held at the hulking Makuhari Messe convention center near Tokyo Disneyland, the Tokyo Auto Salon is similar to the SEMA aftermarket show in Las Vegas. Unlike SEMA, however, the Tokyo Auto Salon is not a trade-only show and is open to the public. This year’s Tokyo Auto Salon features more than 900 unique vehicles from major Japanese manufacturers and aftermarket tuners.

When we first sampled it, the Lexus LC coupe impressed us with its bold exterior design, unique and luxurious interior, and surprising fun-to-drive factor. Now, it looks like Lexus will soon offer that winning blend in a drop-top version, as the brand just revealed the Lexus LC Convertible concept ahead of its Detroit auto show debut.
Though Lexus calls it a concept, this open-air grand tourer looks like it could go into production tomorrow. There are no real surprises in its design or show car flourishes that need to be toned down for production, except maybe the unnoticeably oversized 22-inch wheels. The concept looks exactly like what you’d expect from a roofless LC coupe—which is to say it looks pretty darn good. Then again, most convertibles look their sexiest with the top down, and we don’t get to see the LC convertible with its top in place. That [...]
Mercedes introduces its latest/greatest tech in the S-Class; Ford rolls out its best and brightest features in top sellers like the Explorer (best-selling SUV of all time, with 7.7 million sold and 3.6 million still on the road) and F-150. Here are six of the best appearing on the new Explorer—some of which trump S-Class features.
Smartest Cruise Control
These days plenty of fancy cars offer speed-limit sign recognition with the ability to slow down or speed up to match a new limit, but Ford (at long bloody last) is first to allow you to specify an offset of up to 10 mph above the limit. It’s only January, but we’re ready to name this Convenience Feature of the Year. Maybe of the decade. More cruisy smartness: The system can be set to standard or adaptive mode, and in the latter, it works down to a stop and [...]
