After a decade of resting on its laurels, the Jeep Grand Cherokee finally undergoes a full redesign for the 2022 model year. This marks the Grand Cherokee’s fifth generation after nearly thirty years of carrying the mid-size SUV mantle for the off-road-oriented Jeep brand. While the 2022 Grand Cherokee will maintain the mission of its forebears, it also promises to look toward the future with modern mechanical and convenience kit.
A Grander 2022 Grand CherokeeReportedly riding on a variant of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio’s rear-drive-based underpinnings (the same basic chassis will underpin the Maserati Grecale crossover, too), the 2022 Grand Cherokee ought to improve upon the model’s on-road dynamics without sacrificing its off-road capability.
Look for Jeep to offer a number of different trim levels on the next-gen Grand Cherokee, with most models sporting standard rear-wheel drive. That said, every 2022 Grand Cherokee will offer four-wheel drive as at least an option. Look [...]
There’s no denying the current Honda Civic Type R is a tough act to follow. Having won multiple comparison tests and an astonishing 4th–place finish in our 2018 Best Driver’s Car competition, the Type R is a front-drive performance miracle that audaciously takes all comers—no matter the opponents’ specs or price point. So how could the hot hatchback possibly get any better? With the reveal of the 2022 Honda Civic Prototype, we have reason to believe Honda will pull off another performance magic trick with the 11th-gen-Civic-based Type R. Here’s what we know so far about the upcoming 2022 Honda Civic Type R.
2022 Honda Civic Type R: A New PlatformThe 11th-generation Honda Civic rides on a new platform evolved from the outgoing Civic’s bones. This new global Civic platform is stiffer than its predecessor, and that extra rigidity will benefit all Civic models—including the Type R. Having a stiffer chassis should raise the [...]
Launched in 1959, the original Mini revolutionized automotive design. With its engine mounted transversely across the front of the car and driving the front wheels, the Mini’s space-efficient mechanical layout became the blueprint for small and medium-size cars the world over. The second-generation Mini, launched in 2001 by BMW, was a digitally remastered homage to the original’s cheeky design that also amped up its fun-to-drive dynamics. BMW’s new Mini Vision Urbanaut concept is less a car than a lounge on disco-lit wheels.
Think of the Urbanaut as a small minivan stuffed with a hipster loft interior. According to BMW, it has a “daybed” and a “street balcony” at the front and a “cosy corner” at the rear. Pop a token into one of three slots on the small table and the Urbanaut will present you with one of three “curated Mini moments” (Chill, Wanderlust, and Vibe), each of which changes the interior ambiance, seating configuration, [...]
As soon as the national anthem finished and a couple of military jets flew over the straightaway at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, the Indy Racing Experience staff helped me get into the rear seat of Honda’s two-seat 500-hp Indy car. Helmet and gloves on, I sat down with my knees chest high and got strapped to the seat. The 90-degree Florida weather and what felt like 100 percent humidity had me suffocating in my fire suit, until another nice gentleman—umbrella in hand—asked me if I wanted some shade. I nodded. Although most of my view was blocked by the front seat, I could clearly see Mario Andretti’s brown eyes reflected in the sideview mirrors. He looked like he was concentrating, ready to take off as soon as he got the signal.
“We are gonna take a nice ride ahead of the field; we’ll start the race,” Andretti had said as we were [...]
For four years, the Porsche 919 Hybrid competed in the LMP1 class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Porsche, however, pulled the plug on the three-time Le Mans-winning racer following the 2017 season and instead focused its racing efforts elsewhere (such as Formula E). The 919 Evo, free of racing restrictions, set some records and made some headlines, but that wasn’t the end of Porsche design’s ambitions for the 919. Not only did Porsche designers work on a street iteration of the 919, but the team also envisioned an informal replacement for it—a preview, perhaps, of a future racer.
Dubbed the Vision 920, this low-slung Porsche explored a concept for an exotic supercar for the streets, or a racing vehicle for privateers. In other words, you’re looking at Porsche’s thinking about what a [...]
