The current Toyota Tundra impressed us enough to earn the MotorTrend Truck of the Year award…in 2008. Since then, the Japanese automaker has merely put coats of lipstick on its aging pickup while rivals such as the Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-150, GMC Sierra, and Ram 1500 received at least one full-on redesign. In other words, the Tundra’s been left in the dust. However, Toyota finally is doing something about it.
An All-New Toyota Tundra for 2022The 2022 Toyota Tundra is due to ride on the company’s latest truck chassis. Reportedly coined Toyota New Global Architecture-F (or TNGA-F), the Tundra’s body-on-frame underpinnings ought to benefit from greater use of high-strength steel and other weight-saving materials. Like the Ram 1500, we anticipate the next-gen Tundra will adopt coil springs—in place of the current truck’s leaf springs—to go with its live rear axle. Such a setup will surely improve the truck’s ride quality. Likewise, we expect the [...]
Is the new Mercedes-Benz G-Class just a bit to glitzy for your liking? Maybe the once hardcore mil-spec go-anywhere do-anything utility vehicle has been sanitized by the addition of all that leather and comfort. Or maybe the new G is just a bit too pricey. Either way, if you’re one of the people who longs for something a bit more rugged and rustic than anything Mercedes offers here, and you happen to live in Southeast Asia, you might want to take a look at the Force Gurkha.
It isn’t some crazy million-dollar G-Wagen restomod. Instead, it’s an unrelated but rugged vehicle that draws inspiration from the famous Mercedes off-roader. There are a couple of engine options, including a turbocharged 2.2-liter inline four-cylinder diesel engine that makes 140 horsepower and 237 lb-ft of torque and a 2.6-liter that makes 85 hp and 170 lb-ft. Yes, the bigger engine is less powerful since it makes do without [...]
UPDATE (5:00 p.m ET, August 20): In a rapid turn of events, a court in California has issued an emergency stay, allowing Uber and Lyft to avoid complying with AB-5 until August 25. Uber and Lyft will have more time to file a plan with the court outlining how they will comply with a previous court order to reclassify their workers as employees, unless Proposition 22 passes. This means that Lyft’s suspension of operations, due to go into effect at midnight tonight as per the previous update, has itself been suspended.
UPDATE (1:00 p.m. ET, August 20): Lyft has announced via a blog it is suspending operations in California starting at 12:00 a.m. PT, August 21, claiming changes required by AB-5 would reduce ride availability, cause a reduction in work for its drivers, and increase the cost of rides for users. Lyft is also encouraging voters to approve Proposition 22, a measure supported by Uber [...]
The 2021 Ram 1500 TRX is the American truck and van brand’s first real attempt at producing a true high-performance, off-road pickup. But it’s not the first Ram to bear the TRX badge—and no, we’re not talking about the Ram Rebel TRX concept from 2016.
Back in 2005, when Ram was but a Dodge, the TRX moniker was applied throughout Dodge’s truck line. That included the midsize Dakota, full-size Ram 1500, and monstrous Ram 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty pickups. Mind you, these TRX-badged pickups were far from the 702-hp monster that is the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX. Rather, these trucks are better viewed as precursors to the likes of today’s Ram 1500 Rebel. In other words, think of the original TRX kit as more of an off-road-oriented package with a styling bent than a thoroughly reworked, trailblazing model unto itself.
Minivans aren’t exactly huge business in America anymore—of 3.5 million new vehicles sold in the first quarter of the year, just 81,000 or so were of the sliding-door variety—but nevertheless Kia is going all-out with its next-generation Carnival, which you know better as the Sedona. It’s not headed to global markets just yet, so what you’re seeing here is the home market version that will go on sale in South Korea later this year.
Kia calls the new Sedona minivan a “grand utility vehicle,” for whatever that’s worth. Kia says the design is “SUV-inspired” because minivans are vehicle non grata these days, and that influence can be seen in a rear three-quarters view that shows a whiff of—of all things—Ford Expedition to the surface interactions, as well as the longer, flatter hood. The latter a visual trick applied variously by minivan makers over the years to give their vans more of a rugged, off-roady vibe, [...]
