It’s been two decades since the Toyota Supra was center stage at Toyota dealerships. With the arrival of the all-new A90 generation, believe me when I say we’ve read every one of the “It’s not a real Supra; it’s a BMW with a Toyota badge and body” comments. It’s not, and I wrote a thorough backgrounder on this topic in the March 2019 issue. And would you as an automotive enthusiast prefer both the BMW Z4 M40i and Toyota Supra 3.0, sharing mechanicals as they do, or neither be available right now? It’s obvious that Hot Wheels has some folks on their design team who really get it. What “it” are we referring to?There are all sorts of little nods and winks to various automotive subcultures all over their collections, and the Manga Tuner—part of the 2020 Tooned collection of adorable disproportioned cars—is the perfect example.
All the right kawaii—cute-ified, Japanese-style—touches are there. There’s a front-mounted oil cooler, just like your favorite shakotan-style rides. It’s got a bit of a grachan-style going with the big flat spoiler and the overhanging hood “brow”. And the cartoonish proportions are just perfect, looking like it sprouted right off the screen of some cutesy bosozoku anime show. The tiny toy is right-hand drive, because of course it is.

Remember that hilarious Jeep Gladiator commercial from the Super Bowl? You know, the one that saw Bill Murray reprise the character of Phil Connors from Groundhog Day? (Also, doesn’t the Super Bowl LIV halftime show feel like forever ago?) Well, Jeep’s got a new spot that builds on its Super Bowl ad’s Groundhog Day theme and it’s called “Same Day.”
The ad opens with title cards that read, “We understand that every day is starting to seem the same,” and then cuts to a clock just as it flips to 6:00 am. Suddenly, we see Murray warily eyeing his hotel room from side to side and deciding to stay in bed while Sonny & Cher’s “I Got You Babe” plays from the radio. The Chevrolet Blazer is a talented, well-rounded crossover. The Camaro of SUVs, as we’ve dubbed it, has sporty looks and an aggressive demeanor—especially in sleek RS guise. We recently spent some time in the 2020 Blazer RS and came away impressed with its fresh interior and competence on the road, but we also think there’s room for a little bit more.
On the road, the Blazer RS felt like a willing partner and it was capable enough to handle whatever I threw at it—within reason, of course. I even thought it could handle a swoopy mountain pass if it really had to. Even though it doesn’t have the outright power to demolish SUV lap records, we think the hypothetical Blazer SS could be the X3M fighter Chevrolet never knew it wanted to build.
